From the moment we arrived at Solana Hotel & Spa — set high above the picturesque village of Mellieħa on the north coast of Malta — we knew we were in for something special. This 4-star haven features 241 stylishly furnished rooms and suites spread across two interconnected buildings, four inviting pools (including a spectacular rooftop terrace) and a spa open until 23:00. The hotel’s location means you are just minutes from the beach and yet high enough for panoramic views across the bay, towards Comino and Gozo — more on that later!
Situated in the heart of Mellieħa village, the hotel gives you the best of both worlds: a vibrant local atmosphere and easy access to beautiful beaches. The rooftop pool and terrace capture one of the most striking views we’ve experienced — behold the church of Mellieħa in the foreground, Comino’s shimmering turquoise beyond, and Gozo on the horizon. The moment we stepped out to watch sunset from the infinity pool, cocktail in hand, we surrendered to pure holiday bliss.
Accommodation & Style
Our room was tastefully refurbished, comfortable and relaxed. The hotel’s website promises “beautifully furnished rooms” post-refurbishment. We enjoyed a balcony with partial island view, the minibar, strong WiFi, and the calm of excellent housekeeping. From standard rooms up to luxury suites, every category radiates that effortless Mediterranean holiday feel. The blackout curtains and air-conditioning meant restful sleep even after late spa sessions.
Dining & Ambience
Dining at Solana is a treat. With multiple restaurants — including the rooftop bar “Top Deck”, Italian-style Tosca, and The Prickly Pear – there was always a setting for every mood. We especially loved the evening buffet with themed nights and fresh local produce.
The lobby café and bar offered relaxing breaks between swims and sightseeing. The vibe felt upbeat yet unhurried — perfect for couples, families or just a restorative solo escape.
Infinity Pool & Terrace Highlight
The crown jewel of our stay - the infinity pool on the rooftop. Perched above Mellieħa, with direct views of the bay, Comino and Gozo, it’s simply breathtaking. Whether you were swimming, sun-lounging or sipping a drink at the swim-up bar, the panorama never faltered. Many days passed in blissful slowdown here — so perhaps the only warning is: you may never want to leave the pool.
For relaxation, the spa at Solana delivers. Nataraya Day Spa & Wellness offers deep-tissue massages, hydrotherapy, thalassotherapy and body wraps in serene surroundings. We booked a couples massage late in the afternoon, followed by sauna and steam room. The warm staff, good product selection and calming ritual made it a highlight — the perfect counterbalance to more active beach or sightseeing moments.
A hotel is only as good as its people — and Solana’s team rose to the occasion. From the front-desk greeting to the attentive pool bar staff and spa therapists, everyone was warm, professional and genuinely welcoming. We felt looked after without ever being bothered. TripAdvisor reviews also reflect high marks for staff and service. This level of care added the intangible “holiday glow” that we so often look for as travel writers.
Beach Access & Getting Around
Although perched on a hill, the hotel is very conveniently located near beautiful sandy beaches such as Mellieħa Bay and bus stops linking Malta’s north coast to Valletta and beyond. With a car or Malta’s excellent bus network, exploring Gozo, Comino or Golden Bay is simple.
For those who prefer staying local, the village offers charming restaurants and beachside cafés. So whether you swap pool for sea or combine both, the hotel’s location supports it beautifully.
