Violet Oon Satay Bar & Grill: the Taste and Feel of Singapore
This satay and grill restaurant is the third venture for Singapore’s culinary ambassador Violet Oon, her daughter Tay Su-Lyn and son Tay Yi-Ming. It offers excellent local cooking in beautiful setting at Clarke Quay.

The restaurant’s decor is tasteful and relaxing, with dark wood panels, hanging lamps and rattan fans. It is spacious, with a long bar and plenty of counter seating. On entering, I felt as if I had just stepped onto the set of The Great Gatsby.

The menu includes three meat satay options: chicken, pork tenderloin and grain-fed black Angus beef. All three come with the best gravy I've ever tasted and topped with grated pineapple that gives a zingy vibrancy. The overall effect is a well-balanced blend of spices, herbs and peanuts.

The Tripe Satay ($15) is in a class of its own. It is marinated and paired with the signature dipping sauce that Violet learned from her aunt over 50 years ago. This sauce is a Lemak Coconut Rempah, a rich coconut cream, lightly spiced with galangal and ground candlenuts, with a hint of chilli oil and garlic.

Oon serves another traditional satay including both tripe and prawns. Again, this is a recipe she learnt from her aunt as a child. The delicately flavoured marinade has a rich coconut cream base with a subtle hint of spices.

Other charcoal grilled dishes to sink your teeth into include hae bee hiam seabass, livened up with kaffir lime zest and chincalok relish; garam assam barramundi, perfumed with pineapple and ginger flower; and grilled squid with a turmeric-infused sauce.


After all that, you may feel that you’re about to slip into a food coma. However, ignore that feeling and check out the dessert list, which is short but utterly divine.
