High Tea at the World Famous Ritz, London

Where in London to have traditional afternoon tea if not at the Ritz? Here, at the spectacular Palm Court, they have served tea since the opening of the hotel in 1906. When you come here, you feel like you have been transported to a picture perfect fairy tale, where everything is flawless and beautiful and where aristocratic society had a ball. So be prepared to dress accordingly. Luckily, you don’t need an evening gown but no sportswear and no jeans for gentlemen.

In order to come here, we had to book in advance. Despite having five afternoon tea sittings per day, this place is always fully booked.

This was my third time having afternoon tea at the Ritz, and each time I understand that what I love most is the feeling. That is why people come here. Glittering chandeliers and elegant mirrors, fine dishes, the pianist Ian Gomes, who has been playing here for 22 years and shared a stage with Frank Sinatra. The impeccably dressed waiters in white gloves create a show of pouring champagne into your glass. Oh, and the taste of that champagne!

The Ritz

If you can’t choose from the 18 loose leaf teas, don’t worry – there is a tea sommelier whose professional advice is already included. His name is Giando. He travels around the world to source the best teas for The Ritz. He makes his own tea blends, for example, the delicious chai tea.

For the last few years, I have almost never eaten sugar, but I couldn’t resist the temptation when our silver stand landed on the table filled with sweets on top, a generous plate of finger sandwiches, and warm scones accompanied by Cornish clotted cream and strawberry preserves. And on top, a few slices of the delicious cakes of the day, which were offered to us additionally and accepted with great pleasure.

The two hours flew, and glorious London was waiting for us. So we left, having created one more bright and warm memory of this amazing city. Afternoon tea at The Ritz is definitely the thing to do here.
