Cortina d'Ampezzo: Dolomites in Their Stunning Beauty
TripTempration has visited the Queen of the Dolomites: glorious Cortina d'Ampezzo. This is the most famous and extensive ski resort in the Dolomites. Cortina is also a part of the Dolomiti Superski area, the world’s largest skiing carousel that links 12 top skiing resorts: just one ski pass gives you access to 450 lifts and 1220 kilometres of pistes and ski trails.

Cortina is very conveniently located only 158 km from Venice, so you can get here by car along a pleasant fast highway from the Venice Airport. You can easily combine these marvelous destinations into one vacation.

The resort is surrounded by amazing mountain landscapes, so your eyes will be in a consistent state of pleasure.

If you want to ski with amazing view of the Dolomites, you should definitely manage to get to the Passo Falzarego lift. It starts at the height of 2150 m in the mountains and is pretty far from the Cortina center (you can get there by shuttle bus or by car). This is the most scenic track at Cortina, so it's mandatory to do it at least once.

But be ready, the mountain can be not very friendly at the top and, maybe, you will have to carry your equipment and fight the blizzard at the same time.

Keep going and you'll be rewarded, as the views are amazing here. Just take into account that the slope ends on the other side of the mountain and there is no lift back there, and the only way to get back is by taking a bus or a cab. Anyway, this is definitely worth it, so don't be stopped by this minor inconvenience.

As a bonus, you'll get to see the different military equipment and fortifications built there during the First World War.

Another pretty unique thing in Cortina is the possibility to stay for a night on the mountains in a so called 'rifugio’s', where you can feel the genuine spirit of the amazing local nature. Then you'll be able to check the slopes at the sunrise before everyone else. There is a great number of rifugios in Cortina, so you can choose one what suites you best. You can find stunning views of the Dolomite Mountains there. A rifugio is the best option if you want to clear your mind, unplug yourself from the outside world and find new inspiration.

In Cortina in the main pedestrian street there are many nice places to be enjoyed at night. Bars, cafes, restaurants are welcoming you with their great Italian food and warm atmosphere. Furthermore, in Cortina, there is a quite busy event program throughout the year: from dog parties to the World Cup in snowboard cross. So here you will never be bored.

I really enjoyed my stay in Cortina. Now my dream is to visit this magical place in summer when the nature is awake from its winter sleep.
