My Amazing Car Journey Through Crete: Mysterious Places, Delicious Dinners and Breathtaking Views
I love Crete. For me it is not just another Greek island, it’s more like a small country where you can find anything you want. The largest island of Greece is so fascinating and diverse that you can spend weeks here and not get satiated with it.
To explore the Island from its east part with the only palm forest beach in Europe, to the south coast with absolutely stunning beaches and isolated coves, I would suggest to rent a car, preferably a convertable, to enjoy the taste of the Island and of the fresh sea breeze while driving along the picturesque coastline.
Traveling through the island you will see and smell orange and olive groves, forests of cypresses, pine-trees and evergreen oaks - and a profusion of wild flowers.
A kiss in front of the Cretan symbol of love and pain - the mysterious Spinalonga Island. Crete is remarkable not only for its stunning landscapes, but also for its history and legends - from the ruins of Knossos to Byzantine monasteries and the legendary cave – the birthplace of Zeus.
Crete is famous for its natural beauty and diverse landscapes. Every road curve brings a new spectacular view so you will want to stop and make as many pictures as possible…

Crete has hundreds of miles of beautiful coastline and offers an almost endless supply of beaches. And there is another benefit of renting a car – you won’t need to stay at the crowded beaches of Hersonissos or other tourist resorts. Instead you can just drive and stop at any blissfully untrammeled small rocky bays where you will find a piece of sand just for you.
Greeks live to eat and drink. Wherever you go in Greece you will find some super delicious food. My choice was always in favor of fresh fish and sea food and a glass of cold white wine. It was marvelous!
Agios Nikolaos - an arty, leisurely and sleepy town, built partly atop of ancient remains of bygone residents' homes. There you will feel unbelievable charm and calmness which makes it must to visit place for an after lunch coffee break.
When you go up the mountains you will find small amazing villages with Greek cuisine taverns and narrow lovely streets. Here you can become a part of genuine local life.
One day I decided just for a change to explore short distance sights by scooter.
Now I know that one day I’ll be back to enjoy this patchwork of splendid beaches, ancient treasures and landscapes, and unbelievable tasty food combined with the genuine Greek hospitality.
